Private Samuel Marshall
The background of this North Irish Horseman is not clear, other than that he was from Garvaghy, Portglenone, County Antrim. He was probably either the Samuel Marshall born at Garvaghy on 19 January 1897, the eighth of nine children of farm labourer John Marshall and his wife Elizabeth (née Kerr), or the Samuel James Marshall born on 4 January 1897 at Tullynahinnion, Portglenone, the last of eight children of agricultural labourer James Marshall and his wife Jane (née Surgenor). Both were living with their families at Garvaghy at the time of the 1911 Census.
Samuel Marshall enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 1 and 10 November 1916 (No.2303). He trained at the regiment's reserve camp at Antrim.
On 30 April 1917 he was one of ten North Irish Horsemen who transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) (No.105379). They embarked for France soon after this.
Marshall remained with the MGC (Cavalry) until the end of the war. He probably served in Germany with the Army of Occupation during 1919. On 14 November 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
